“We loved working with Michael, Brenda and Paul. They were receptive to our comments and open to input — not just listening, but also taking it to heart. They gave us a design that made the most beautiful school in the world.”

This project was a joint venture with Usry Wolfe Koll architects. Given the similarities of programmed requirements, we modified our Armstrong Elementary prototype design for Brushy Creek, adapting it for the site and phasing constraints of the campus.
Among our most significant changes was the need to complete the new facility on the grounds of the existing school, prior to demolishing the original structure. We proposed a “mirror-image” variation of the Armstrong Elementary plan, as it offered a practical strategy for site use and phasing. The team transformed the clock tower of the Armstrong prototype design into the open bell tower—now the landmark element of the Brushy Creek campus.
Other changes to exterior building materials, interior color schemes and detailing gave the school its own unique character and identity. Meanwhile, the School District of Greenville County (and Upstate taxpayers) benefited from significant savings on design fees and scheduling.
